Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
January 20th, 2016
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
test procedure in accordance with generally accepted scientific standards and described in sufficient detail
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

PRELIMINARY SCREENING TEST

The test substance turned red at the place where the burner flame was applied. But the test substance did not ignite nor smoulder in the period of 2 minutes. After the flame had been put off only that part of the sample which was in contact with the flame was changed.

PRELIMINARY TEST EVALUATION

The substance does not ignite and not propagate combustion neither by burning with flame or by smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 4 -minute test period. Therefore the substance should not be considered as highly flammable and no further testing its required.

Interpretation of results:
other: not classified, according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008)
Conclusions:
The substance should not be considered as highly flammable and no further testing its required.
Executive summary:

The test substance has been assayed according to the EU Method A.10. It is formed into an unbroken strip or powder train about 250 mm long and a preliminary screening test is performed to determine if, on ignition by a gas flame, propagation by burning with flame or smouldering occurs.

The test substance turned red at the place where the burner flame was applied; it did not ignite nor smoulder in the period of 2 minutes. After the flame had been put off only that part of the sample which was in contact with the flame was changed.

The substance does not ignite and not propagate combustion neither by burning with flame or by smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 4 -minute test period.

Conclusion

The substance should not be considered as highly flammable and no further testing its required.

Additional information

EU method A.10

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), 2.7 section, flammable solids, powdered, granular or pasty substances or mixtures shall be classified as readily combustible solids when the time of burning of one or more of the test runs, performed in accordance with the test method described in Part III, sub-section 33.2.1, of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, is less than 45 seconds or the rate of burning is more than 2.2 mm/s.

In the flammability test performed, Basic Blue 140 did not propagate burning of a 200 mm length of the strip in less than four minutes, therefore the substance resulted non flammable.

In conclusion, the Basic Blue 140 does not meet the criteria to be classified as flammable, according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008).
