Description of key information

Catalase has been tested in aquatic species representing three trophic levels i.e. algae, crustaceans and fish. All studies were conducted according to OECD guidelines and in compliance with GLP.

Effect concentrations were found to be above the tested concentrations 100 mg/L (test material as received), corresponding to >0.062 mg active enzyme protein (aep)/L.

The results from the aquatic studies are following:

OECD guideline 201: unicellular green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, 72 hour semi-static exposure:

EbC50(72h): >100 mg/L corresponding to >0.062 mg aep/L

ErC50(24-72h): >100 mg/l corresponding to >0.062 mg aep/L

NOEC for the 24 -72 hour growth rate: >=100 mg/L corresponding to >=0.062 mg aep/L

OECD guideline 202:Daphnia magna, 48 hour semi-static exposure

EC50(24h): >100 mg a.i/L, corresponding to >0.062 mg aep/L

EC50(48h): >100 mg a.i/L, corresponding to >0.062 mg aep/L

NOEC (48h): >or= 100 mg a.i/L, corresponding to >0.062 mg aep/L

OECD guideline 203: Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), 96 hour semi-static exposure

Highest concentration resulting in 0% mortality: >100 mg a.i/L, corresponding to >0.062 mg aep/L

Lowest concentration resulting in 100% mortality: >100 mg a.i/L, corresponding to >0.062 mg aep/L

No-observed effect concentration (NOEC): >or=100 mg a.i/L (nominal), corresponding to >= 0.062 mg aep/L

Based on this and the fact that catalase belongs to the same sub-sub class as peroxidase it is concluded that read-across to peroxidase is valid and can be applied for catalase.
