- A good level of biodegradation is noted with both benzoic acid and the sodium salt. The absence of significant inhibition of microbial activity by lithium ions suggests that the lithium will not prevent biodegradation of benzoate and no accumulation in the environment is expected.Lithium occur naturally in nature and is present in soil and surface water.
