Phototransformation in air due to reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals was calculated for tetrachlorophthalic anhydride and its hydrolysis product tetrachlorophthalic acid, considering an OH-concentration of 500000 radicals/cm³ as a 24-h average. The estimated half-life for tetrachlorophthalic anhydride was 508 days and 15 days for the hydrolysis product tetrachlorophthalic acid.

Hydrolytical properties of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride was assessed according to the OECD TG 111 (2004). At ambient conditions the experimentally determined half-life of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride in water at pH 4, 7 and 9 was less than 5 minutes. Tetrachlorophthalic acid was determined as the main hydrolysis product.
