Description of key information

A test with respect to the acute toxicity towards invertebrates (Daphnia magna) using the hydrolsis product tetrachlorophthalic acid (CAS 632-58-6) as test substance is taken into account to describe the hazardous potential of tetrachlorophthalic anhydride towards aquatic invertebrates. No toxic effects were observed in this study. A 48-EC50 value of > 104 mg/l is obtained. The substance does not to be classified based on the result of this study in accordance with the criteria set in Directive 67/548/EC and Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 including the Regulation (EC) 286/2011.

Concerning the toxicity with Daphnia magna there are only not assignable tests with tetrachlorophthalic anhydride available. In order to draw a conclusion on toxicity towards aquatic invertebrates for tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, an avialable test on the acute toxicity to Daphnia magna with the hydrolysis product tetrachlorophthalic acid (CAS 632-58-6) is taken into account. The study was performed according to the OECD TG 202 at the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Japan. Daphnia magna were exposed to the test solution of the nominal concentration of the test substance of 100 mg/L and to a blank control solution for a period of 48 h under semi static conditions in buffered medium. Mobility and visible abnormalities were recorded at 24 and 48 h. The measured concentrations confirmed that deviation from the nominal concentrations was less than 20 % (measured concentrations were in the range of 94.8 - 100.4 % of nominal concentrations). No toxic effect and abnormal behavior were observed. The toxicity study is classified as acceptable and satisfies the guideline requirements for the acute daphnia study.
