Additional information

Data on physical and chemical properties for ethanethiol (CAS 75-08-1) have been taken from a number of primary and secondary sources. The data in the secondary sources are based on a critical evaluation of peer-reviewed data and the selected values are considered to be reliable and representative of the property under investigation. Information on the review process was documented in the introduction of the source. The use of Klimisch codes (Klimisch et al., 1997) was extended to these secondary sources and a reliability code of (2) valid with restrictions was assigned when using the authoritative secondary source.

Ethanethiol is a liquid at standard temperature and pressure, with a reported melting point of -144°C and measured boiling point of 34 ± 1°C (307 ± 1 K) at 100.9 kPa. It has a relative density of 0.839 and a measured vapour pressure of 58.9 kPa at 20°C.

The substance is soluble in water, with a measured aqueous solubility of 8.86 g/L at 20°C. The reported n-octanol-water partition coefficient, log Kow, is 1.5.

Ethanethiol has a harmonised classification as a flammable liquid (Category 2; H225: Highly flammable liquid and vapour) in Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP). However, a recently measured flashpoint value <-30°C and a measured boiling point of 34°C indicate that the substance requires classification as an extremely flammable liquid (Category 1; H226: Extremely flammable liquid and vapour).

The substance has an auto-ignition temperature of 299°C; it is not explosive and not oxidising, on the basis of chemical structure.
