Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
Scientific study by using activated sludge in a Warburg manometer.
The study investigated the ability of activated sludges from 3 municipal waste treatment plants in the Columbus, Ohio, area to oxidise i.a. L-4-hydroxyproline. The experimental design was based upon exposure of i.a. L-4-hydroxyproline at a concentration of 500 mg/l to activated sludge solids at 2500 mg/l in the Warburg respiriometer with oxygen uptake as the measure of oxidation of the test compound.
GLP compliance:
no
Remarks:
Study performed prior to implementation of GLP.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Interpretation of results:
readily biodegradable
Conclusions:
L-4-hydroxyproline is rapidly oxidized in activated sludge. After only 24 h already more than 18 % of the Theoretical Oxygen Demand were achieved. This leads to the conclusion that the test substance is readily biodegradable.
Executive summary:

L-4-hydroxyproline is considered readily biodegradable.
