Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Photodegradation may play a considerable role under environmental conditions with a half-life of 20.67 h (BASF, 2021). According to an experimental study (Mitsubishi/Safepharm, 2007) slow hydrolysis with a half-life of 135 d at pH 7 and 25 °C is possible.

Additional information

Phototransformation in air:

According to Q(SAR) data using SRC AOP, tert-butyl methacrylate (TBMA) will be rapidly degraded by photochemical processes after exposure to the air reacting with the photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals and with ozone (calculated half-life for a 24-hour day and 0.5E+06 OH/cm3: 20.67 hours; for a 24-hour day and 7E11 O3/cm3: 1 day) (BASF, 2021).

Hydrolysis:

In an experimental study (Mitsubishi/ Safepharm, 2007) according to OECD 111 the hydrolysis potential of TBMA was assessed as function of pH. As a result a half life of 135 d at 25 °C and pH 7 was estimated from the graph concentration versus time (logarithmic). As hydrolysis products of the test material methacrylic acid (2-methyl-2-propenoic acid) and t-butanol (2-methyl-2-propanol) were identified which are readily or inherent biodegradable.
