Description of key information

The chronic treatment of early-life-stages of fish with glutaraldehyde resulted in a NOEC of 1.6 mg a.i./L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

An Early Life-Stage toxicity test was conducted with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) according to OECD Guideline 210 (BASF AG 52FO447/975114). As prescribed by the guideline, fertilized eggs of rainbow trout were exposed under flow-through conditions to the following concentrations of glutaraldehyde 50%: 0.32, 1.0, 3.2 and 10.0 mg/L for 97 days. The test parameters were survival, time to hatch and swim-up, toxic signs and abnormalities as well as body weight and length.

The chronic treatment of early-life-stages of fish with glutaraldehyde resulted in mortality and in a slight delay in the start of hatch at nominal test concentration of 10 mg/L glutaraldehyde; therefore, the NOEC was 3.2 mg/L. Referring to the active ingredient glutaraldehyde as such (48.15% in the test substance), the NOEC- and LOEC values are 1.6 mg a.i./L and 5 mg a.i./L, respectively.

Conclusion: The chronic treatment of early-life-stages of fish with glutaraldehyde resulted in a NOEC of 1.6 mg a.i./L.
