Description of key information

The key study (BASF 1/0299/2/88) suggests an LC50 (48h) of 1.0 mg/L. The chronic toxicity study from section 6.1.4 (Brixham Environmental Laboratory BL6032/B ) supports this value suggesting an LC50 >0.56mg/L.

The BASF study (BASF 1/0299/88) used as the key study, indicates an LC50 of 1.0mg/L to aquatic invertebrates; further studies in the 4 -chloro-2 -methyl phenol European Risk Assessment Report ( Denmark 2002) cited two further acute studies. A VKI study (1993) gave an LC50of 0.63mg/L and a study by LeBlanc (1980) gave an LC50of 0.29mg/L.

It is suggested in the European Risk Assessment Report that the LeBlanc study is an outlier and therefore this study is not included in this dossier.

The European Risk Assessment Report also cites a range finding test but there are no details to allow further interpretation of the data, only that the mortality was 0% after 48h at 0 mg/L, and 100% at 1.8 mg/L and 3.2 mg/L.

A chronic toxicity study was performed (Brixham Environmental Lab, BL6032/B) from which a 48 hours LC50was calculated, the value of >0.56mg/L is in agreement with both the BASF and VKI study.

Overall the conclusion would be that the LC50for PCOC after 48 hours is within the range 0.56 -1.8mg/L.
