Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
flash point of flammable liquids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
08 November to 13 December 2007
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study without detailed documentation
Remarks:
The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP. The substance is adequately identified, but details on composition are missing. Therefore validation applies with restrictions.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.9 (Flash-Point)
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
no isomers ratio; atmospheric pressure not specified, but assumed to be ambient.
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Not applicable
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Remarks:
effective 16 March 2007 (validity 18 months)
Type of method:
closed cup
Flash point apparatus:
Setaflash apparatus
Dynamic viscosity of test material:
No data
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Storage conditions of test material: Stored at room temperature protected from direct sun light.
Key result
Flash point:
90 °C
Atm. press.:
ca. 1 atm

In a first test, the temperature was increased by successive steps of +5.0 °C, using 2 mL of sample. Flashing occurred at 95 °C.

The procedure was reproduced in duplicate using a new 2.0 mL sample for each replicate test, and the temperature was regularly increased by successive steps of 0.5 °C, Flashing occurred at 90.5 °C in both cases.

Mean flash point = 90.5 °C ± 0.0 °C

Reference material: diethyl-phthalate. Nominal flash point = 159 ± 3 °C. Measured flash point = 161.5 °C.

Interpretation of results:
Category 4 (combustible liquids) based on GHS criteria
Remarks:
EU-CLP criteria not met
Conclusions:
The flash point of the test substance is above the classification threshold of 60 °C (CLP criteria), but below the classification threshold of 93 °C (GHS criteria). Therefore, the test substance is NOT a flammable liquid according to CLP criteria, but classified as flammable liquid in cat.4 according to GHS criteria.
Executive summary:

The flash point of the test substance was determined under GLP according to EU Method A.9, using a closed cup Setaflash apparatus.

After a screening determination, two main runs were performed and found identical (90.5°C). The result rounded down was retained as final.

The flash point of test substance has been determined to be 90 °C.

Description of key information

The substance is NOT classified as flammable liquid according to CLP Regulation criteria. It is classified as flammable liquid in cat.4 according to UN GHS.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
90 °C

Additional information

A reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized EC method and under GLP, is available.

Despite minor restrictions due to incomplete test item identification, it is considered as key study, and the result is retained as key data.

(see IUCLID Section 4.13 for justification of non-classification)
