Description of key information

Additional information

Physicochemical properties of AP 1300 S has been investigated taken into account experimental, literature and estimated data; furthermore, the available information about the structural analogous Similar Substance 01 (CAS 21850-44-2, 1,1'-propane-2,2-diylbis[3,5-dibromo-4-(2,3-dibromopropoxy)benzene]) have been taken into account.

Similar Substance 01 shares with AP 1300 S the same structure, except for the fact that Similar Substance 01 presents two dibromobutane functional groups linked to the dibromophenol core, instead the dibromo-methylbutane as in the case of AP 1300 S. The justification for the Read Across approach has been detailed in the document attached to the IUCLID Section 13.

APPEARANCE/PHYSICAL STATE/COLOUR

AP 1300 S is an inorganic white powder, at 20 °C and 1013 hPa; it is characterized by a granulated powder (MMD: 93.44 µm), with fine residues (MMD: 7.99 µm).

The density value of the AP 1300 S used for the assessment has been calculated from the available data for the substance itself and for the Similar Substance 01 (CAS 21850-44-2).

AP 1300 S CAS 21850-44-2
Density* ca. 2.1 ± 0.1 g/cm3 2.2 ± 0.1 g/cm3
Specific gravity** 0.7 – 0.9

*Predicted data is generated using the ACD/Labs Percepta Platform - PhysChem Module (Advanced Chemistry Development, Inc. (ACD/Labs))

**World Health Organization (WHO, Geneva, 1995); Dr. G.J. van Esch “Tetrabromobisphenol A and Derivatived” (Environmental health criteria ; 172)

Since AP 1300 S is a solid, properties like vapour pressure, surface tension and flash point can be neglected.

MELTING and BOILING POINT

The melting and boiling point values of the AP 1300 S used for the assessment have been calculated from the available data for the substance itself and for the Similar Substance 01 (CAS 21850-44-2).

AP 1300 S CAS 21850-44-2
Melting point 287.75 °C 281.21 °C
Boiling point 660.89 °C 646.88 °C

Estimated by means of MPBWIN v1.43 (September 2010), using the SMILE notation CC(C)(c1cc(Br)c(OCC(C)(Br)CBr)c(Br)c1)c1cc(Br)c(OCC(C)(Br)CBr)c(Br)c1

A melting point of CAS 2185-44-2 is reported to be in the range of 90 - 100 °C, as cited in the World Health Organization (WHO, Geneva, 1995); Dr. G.J. van Esch “Tetrabromobisphenol A and Derivatived” (Environmental health criteria ; 172), thus the melting point of AP 1300 S is expected to be in the same range of temperature. Furthermore, based on the information cited in the World Health Organization (WHO, Geneva, 1995); Dr. G.J. van Esch "Tetrabromobisphenol A and Derivatived” (Environmental health criteria ; 172), AP 1300 S is expected to decompose before boiling from 276 °C.

SOLUBILITY

A test was conducted on the substance in itself in order to evaluate the water solubility of AP1300S. The study was conducted according to the OECD Guideline 105. Based on the observations reported above the solubility in water was stated as < 20 µg/L (mean +standard deviation).

Moreover the water solubility value of the AP 1300 S has been estimated by two different tools and, in both cases, the substance has been estimated to be insoluble in water (water solubility lower than 0.1 mg/l). The water solubility value reported for the Similar Substance 01 in the ECHA website is lower than 0.1 mg/l, confirming the behaviour in water expected for AP 1300 S.

AP 1300 S does not contain functional groups that are expected to ionize under environmental condition.

PARTITION COEFFICIENT

The partition coefficient value of AP1300S has been estimated by meand two different tools. Based on the calculations, AP 1300 S is characterized by an high log kow (12.42).

FLAMMABILITY

An experimental result is available on AP 1300 S, the test has been conducted according to the EU Method A.10, during the test no flame has been observed therefore AP 1300 S is considered as non flammable.

AUTO FLAMMABILITY/EXPLOSIVENESS/OXIDISING PROPERTIES

AP 1300 S is a halogenated flame retardant and based on its industrial application decreases the ignitability of materials and inhibits the combustion process, limiting the amount of heat released. Moreover the flame retardants decrease the likelihood of a fire occurring and/or decrease a range of undesirable consequences of a fire, therefore the principal feature of the flame retardants is the one to be non flammable.

AP 1300 S is not flammable and/or auto-flammable. It does not ignite and propagate combustion; the screening evaluation failed to evidence any reason of concern, on the basis of the chemical structure analysis and the thermal behaviour investigation.
