- In the presence of air or oxygen, uninhibited vinylidene chloride forms a violently explosive complex peroxide at temperatures as low as 40°C.
Residues in vessels containing vinylidene chloride should be handled with great care, and the peroxides should be destroyed with water at room temperature.
Copper, aluminum, and their alloys should not be used in handling vinylidene chloride. Copper can react with acetylenic
impurities, whereas aluminum can react with vinylidene chloride. The resulting reaction products are extremely reactive and potentially hazardous. - Transformation products:
