Test material

Constituent 1
Reference substance name:
Potassium sulfate (K2SO4)
IUPAC Name:
Potassium sulfate (K2SO4)
Constituent 2
Reference substance name:
Potassium magnesium sulfate (K2-MgSO4)
IUPAC Name:
Potassium magnesium sulfate (K2-MgSO4)
Details on test material:
Potassium sulfate (K2SO4), Potassium magnesium sulfate (K2-MgSO4)
Dose method:
feed
Analytical monitoring:
not specified
Vehicle:
not specified
Details on preparation and analysis of diet:
The basal diet was deficient in sulfur amino acids. Treatments included no supplemental sulfate, 0.1% (1000 ppm) of K2SO4 and 0.1% K2-MgSO4. Supplemental methionine was 0, 0.1, and 0.15%.

Test organisms

Test organisms (species):
other: Nicholas Large White turkey poults
Details on test organisms:
Turkey poults were fed experimental diets from 0 to 21 days of age.

Study design

Total exposure duration (if not single dose):
21 d
Post exposure observation period:
no data
No. of animals per sex per dose and/or stage:
288 poults were assigned to 36 pens
Nominal and measured doses / concentrations:
0.1% (1000 ppm) of K2SO4 and 0.1% K2-MgSO4.
Details on test conditions:
At day one a total of 288 poults were assigned to 36 pens. Individual body weights were obtained at 21 days of age and food consumed during the experiment was measured.

Results and discussion

Effect levels
Duration (if not single dose):
21 d
Dose descriptor:
NOEC
Effect level:
> 1 000 other: mg/L
Basis for effect:
body weight
Mortality and sub-lethal effects:
The addition of K2SO4 to diets without supplemental methionine resulted in significantly increased body weight, but did not influence feed efficiency. The addition of either K2SO4 or K2-MgSO4 to the diet containing 0.1% methionine resulted in a further increase in growth compared to the unsupplemented control diet, indicating that they can spare a portion of the sulfur amino acid requirement in the diet of turkey poults.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
NOEC > 1000 mg/L
