According to EU regulation 1907/2006, Annex VII, column 2 a sensitisation study needs not to be conducted since Diphosphorus pentaoxide is classified as corrosive to the skin.

Justification for classification or non-classification

As above mentioned no sensitisation studies have to be conducted with Diphosphorus pentaoxide due to its corrosive properties.

Diphosphorus pentaoxide is a hygroscopic solid which forms with moisture/water an aqueous solution of phosphorus oxyacids (primary hydrolysis) that are subject to further (secondary) hydrolysis to the end product phosphoric acid, H3PO4. The exposure to Diphosphorus pentaoxide under physiological conditions (aqueous system) will principally lead to local effects due to the strong corrosivity of the generated phosphoric acid. Consequently, the effects caused by Phosphoric acid/Diphosphorus pentaoxide, respectively are solely based on secondary effects of corrosivity.

Allergic skin reactions or case reports of acute contact dermatitis to Diphosphorus pentaoxide have not been described in the literature and skin contact/contact with the respiratory system is very unlikly to occur due to the corrosivity of the substance.

Based on the exisiting data no statement on classification/non-classification with reference the sensitising properties can be made.
