SIP description: 'Lead, dross' is a solid in granular or particulate form. It is produced by chemical reactions during the cooling of molten lead bullion in air in kettles and skimming the resultant precipitate surface layer. 'Lead, dross' is composed primarily of lead oxides and may contain significant levels of oxides of antimony, tin, zinc and copper, as well as metal sulphides and/or some elements in metallic form.

Original SIEF description:  Lead, dross is a solid mass which forms on top of molten lead during the refining process. Lead dross consists of variable amounts of lead, copper, zinc, tin, antimony and other metals in either alloy form or as compounds such as oxides, sulphides and sulphates.

Lead dross is an odourless solid (at 20°C and 101.3 kPA), usually in solid granular or particulate form. The colour in which it appears is variable; typically light grey to black; may be yellow to light red.

The density will vary according to the precise composition of the sample. The density of the tested sample was 5.78 g/cm3. The melting point is shown to be 321°C. Consequently, boiling point and vapour pressure cannot be determined. The water solubility test shows dissolution of metal ions. Three samples were tested for granulometry, a D50 = 34 µm, 74 µm and 254 µm were determined. Both the results of the water solubility test and the granulometry test should be used with caution.

 

There is no evidence of physical hazards in terms of (auto)flammability, explosivity and oxidizing properties. Studies regarding flash point, partition coefficient and surface tension do not need to be conducted.
