Aquatic PNECs

Data has been obtained from studies conducted with chloroprene. Data are available for fish, Daphnia and algae, together with a NOEC from a 21 day Daphnia reproduction study.  Based on the data summarised above the lowest acute toxicity endpoint use for use in determining the freshwater aquatic PNEC is the fish acute 96 h LC50 value of >5.25 mg/L. Given that there is some debate over the NOEC from the Daphnia reproduction study, and that the lowest acute toxicity endpoint has been obtained from an acute toxicity study with fish it is considered appropriate to use the value of 5.25 mg/L.


 The following PNECs were calculated using this endpoint:

PNEC Aqua (freshwater) - Based on an assessment factor of 1000, the PNEC is 0.00525 mg/L.

PNEC Aqua (sediment) - Based on equilibrium partitioning method the PNEC is 0.05444 mg/L.

PNEC STP - Based on an assessment factor 10 the PNEC is 16.38 mg/L.

Conclusion on classification

According to Annex VI to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, chloroprene is classified for environmental hazards as: Aquatic Chronic 2 (H411) – toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.
