Substance: Lead antimonial dross


“Lead, antimonial, dross is formed when sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) is added to molten lead bullion to remove antimony, tin or arsenic. Lead, antimonial, dross refining consists of variable amounts of lead, antimony and other metals in either alloy form or as compounds such as oxides, sulphides and sulphates. ”

Lead antimonial dross is an odourless solid (at 20°C and 101.3 kPA) in the form of pellets. It has a variable colour, typically orange-yellow-white/ochre. The density will vary according to the precise composition of the sample. The density of the tested sample was 7.51 g/cm3. The melting point is shown to be 321°C. Consequently, boiling point and vapour pressure cannot be determined. The water solubility test shows dissolution of metal ions. One sample was tested for granulometry, a D50 = 313 micrometer was determined. Both the results of the water solubility test and the granulometry test should be used with caution.


There is no evidence of physical hazards in terms of (auto)flammability, explosivity and oxidizing properties.

Studies regarding flash point, partition coefficient and surface tension do not need to be conducted.
