Additional information

1,6-Bis(trimethoxysilyl)hexane attained 74% biodegradation in 28 days in a reliable study conducted in accordance with OECD 301B (CO2 Evolution Method) and in compliance with GLP. The overall conclusion of this study is that the substance is readily biodegradable failing the 10-day window criterion since the pass level of 60% was not met within 10 days of degradation reaching 10%.

1,6-Bis(trimethoxysilyl)hexane hydrolyses rapidly in water at pH 7 and 25°C (half-life 5.2 hours), producing six moles of methanol for each mole of parent material. The observed biodegradation can mainly be accounted for by degradation of methanol, which is readily biodegradable (OECD 2004). The silanol hydrolysis product 1,6-bis(trihydroxysilyl)hexane is not expected to be readily biodegradable.

It is not necessary to obtain further information on biodegradation via simulation tests in water, sediment or soil for this Annex VIII registration.
