Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2010-06-28
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Principles of method if other than guideline:
not reported
GLP compliance:
no
Test procedure:
burning time (test type not further specified)
Remarks:
or specified in description of method (migrated information)
Burning time:
328 s
Remarks on result:
other: over a distance of 200 mm

The preliminary screening test showed propagation over a distance of 200 mm within 5 minutes and 28 seconds. According to the definition in the EEC-directive 92/69/EEC, method A.10. the test item as nugget-behaved solid is not considered as flammable.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information

Flammability: the substance is not a flammable solid unless in a powder form.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The test substance is a nugget-behaved solid at room temperature. The preliminary screening test according to EU Method A.10 was performed and showed propagation over a distance of 200 mm within 5 minutes and 28 seconds.

Therefore the test substance (granular form) is considered not to be a flammable solid. The substance has no pyrophoric properties and does not liberate flammable gases on contact with water. It is not self-heating, because it is completely molten at temperatures below 160 °C. However based on the company's experience, the substance should be considered as a flammble solid if it is marketed or used in a powder form.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging (CLP) of substances and mixtures, the substance is considered not to be a flammable solid if it is marketed or used in a granular form. The substance has no pyrophoric properties and it does not liberate flammable gases on contact with water. The substance is not self-heating. However based on the company's experience, the substance should be considered as a flammable solid if it is marketed or used in a powder form.
