Description of key information

The substance sodium chloroacetate completely dissociates (in water) into sodium and chloroacetate. Since this is not an equilibrium, no dissociation constant can determined for the substance. However, the anion moiety of the salt has a dissociative group. In solution, the chloroacetate ion is the conjugate base of monochloroacetic acid. Therefore the dissociation constant of monochloroacetic acid was provided. Using the titration method (EC A.25 and OECD 112), the pKa value for dissociation of the acidic group in monochloroacetic acid was determined to be 2.8
