Toxicity to terrestrial arthropods

Description of key information

An experimental study to assess toxicity to terrestrial arthropods has not been conducted as the toxicity of the substance to terrestrial invertebrates is assessed through experimental data on terrestrial macro-organisms except arthropods.

Due to the technical challenges of testing volatile substances, a validated TLM-EqP framework was used to derive terrestrial effect values to act as supporting studies. TLM values for the LC50 and EC10 for m-xylene were 12.417 and 2.379 mg/kg soil dw respectively. These data were considered reliable; however, were not used in the PNEC derivation, since experimental data is available for other soil organisms. In addition published data by governmental body (Environment Canada, 2005) is available for terrestrial arthropods.

The Draft Screening Assessment Report (Environment Canada 2014) presents results from ESG International (2002) for Collembola of 14 day LC25 of 259 mg/kg dw (fine clay loam).

The estimated 28 day LL50 values from TLM QSAR were 12.417 - 41.844 mg/kg dw and 28 day long-term effects NOELR values from TLM QSAR were 2.379 - 8.016 mg/kg dw.
