0.5 mL of aqueous solution was applied to gauze pads (3x3 cm). The patches were fixed on the prepared skin areas of the flank and covered by wrapping either an air-permeable circular bandage (semi-occlusive method) or air tight plastic foil (occlusive method) around the animals.

Dorsal and lateral parts of the trunk were clipped 15-24 hr prior to exposure. Only animals with healthy and uninjured skin were used. Four patches were applied dorsally (laterally) to each animal.
