Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

According to the Annex VII Standard Information Requirements for REACH, a short term test on aquatic invertebrates (daphnia preferred) is required. A specific rule for adaptation for aquatic toxicity indicates that the study does not need to be conducted if: - there are mitigating factors indicating that aquatic toxicity is unlikely to occur for instance if the substance is highly insoluble in water or the substance is unlikely to cross biological membranes; or - adequate information for environmental classification and labelling is available. These are highly reactive substances both in air and in contact to water, causing explosive or flammable situations as explained below. Thus, this test is technically not feasible to conduct and is scientifically unjustified.

According to the Annex VII Standard Information Requirements for REACH, a growth inhibition test on aquatic plants (algae preferred) is required. A specific rule for adaptation for aquatic toxicity indicates that the study does not need to be conducted ifthere are mitigating factors indicating that aquatic toxicity is unlikely to occur, for instance, if the substance is highly insoluble in water or the substance is unlikely to cross biological membranes.

Thus, exposure of aquatic organisms to zinc alkyls would not generate meaningful data and these studies are waived as they are technically not feasible.
