In water, potassium methanolate rapidly hydrolyses to methanol and potassium hydroxide (OECD, 2002). Thus, potassium methanolate is classified on the basis of its degradation products methanol and potassium hydroxide.

Methanol is readily biodegradable and has a low potential to bioaccumulate. All acute and chronic effect concentrations are well above 100 mg/L. Potassium hydroxide is included in Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (Index No.: 011-002-00-6) and not classified for environmental hazards. The hazard assessment of potassium hydroxide included in this dossier does not indicate a difference compared to the harmonized classification. Thus, potassium methanolate does not need to be classified and labelled as environmental hazardous according to the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and all further amendments and UN/GHS.
