Description of key information

The inhibition of the bioluminescence of the marine bacterium Photobacterium phosphoreum by NaOH has been measured with the Microtox test system, resulting in a 15-minutes EC50 of 22 mg/L (Bulich et al, 1990). The 2-minute EC10 of NaOH for the freshwater ciliated protozoan Tetrhymena thermophila (endpoint studied: motility pattern) is 161 mg/L).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
22 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
161 mg/L

Additional information

The above mentioned data can be used in a weight of evidence approach, however these data should be interpreted with caution, since the method is not accepted to be reliable and important study details are missing (Klimisch 3)
