Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Comprehensive data are available for the magnesium sulfonate and calcium sulfonate analogous read-across substances (CAS 70024-69-0, CAS 71786-47-5). The read-across justification is provided in the Annex of this Chemical Safety Report.

Calcium sulfonate read-across substance (CAS 70024-69-0) attained 8 % degradation (OECD Guideline 301D, Douglas, 1989). Magnesium sulfonate read-across substance (CAS 71786-47-5) attained only 1.5 % degradation after 28 days (OECD 301B,Sanitised, H., 1995). Thus, based on the results of studies on the magnesium and calcium sulfonate read-across substance, the magnesium sulfonate target substance is not expected to be readily biodegradable. Furthermore, the magnesium sulfonate target substance is not expected to be inherently biodegradable based on limited degradation that was observed with magnesium and calcium sulfonate read-across substances (CAS 71786 -47 -5, CAS 70024-69-0).
