Description of key information

Appearance / physical state / colour:

The test item Dihydrolipoic Acid is a yellow to orange organic liquid with a sulfuric stench.

Boiling point:

The boiling point of Dyhydrolipoic Acid was tested twice with a method according to EU Method A.2 ("Boiling Temperature").

A visuell check was carried out. The liquid was filled into a capillary tube and heated up slowly until a continuous and quick bubble formation takes place. The temperatue was read off and the values were 254.3 °C and 254.0 °C. The mean was calculated and the boiling point of Dihydrolipoic Acid was determined to be254.2 °C.

Density:

The density of Dihydrolipoic Acid was determined by a density meter to be 1.1358 g/cm3 at 20 °C.

Vapour pressure:

A study (according to Method A.4 specified in Commission Directive 92/69/EEC) was performed to determine the vapour pressure of Dihydrolipoic Acid. In this study the test material has been determined to have a vapour pressure of 9.9E-6 Pa at 25 °C using a vapour pressure balance.

Partition coefficient:

The partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of Dihydrolipoic Acid was determined with the HPLC-Method to be 1.9.

Surface tension:

Using a ring method based on ISO 304 and Method A5 of Commission Directive 92/69/EEC the surface tension of Dihydrolipoic Acid was determined to be 53.6 mN/m (1.02 g/L solution) at 21 °C +/- 0.5 °C. Therefore Dihydrolipoic Acid is considered to be asurface-activematerial.

Flash point:

The determination of the flash point of Dihydrolipoic Acid was performed according to Cleveland with an open cup (DIN 51376). Therefore the test substance was heated in the open cup slowly. After 2 °C steps it was tried to inflame the substance with help of an igniting flame. When an ignition was observed on the surface of the sample the temperature was taken as flash point. The Flash Point of Dyhydrolipoic Acid was determined twice and the mean was calculated to be175.6 °C.

Auto flammability:

A test for the determination of the auto flammability of Dihydrolipoic Acid was performed according to DIN 51794. The result was that the auto flammability of Dihydrolipoic Acid occurs at 285 °C.
