Description of key information

Water solubility of Synthetic Rutile (experimental results, according to OECD guidance document No. 29): insoluble in water (<0.1 mg/L).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

For the evaluation of this endpoint data from dissolution tests conducted according to the Guidance document on transformation/dissolution of metals and metal compounds in Aqueous media, OECD Series on Testing and Assessment, No.29.

Three different batches of Synthetic Rutile were tested in a 24-hour screening test and in a 7-day full dissolution test. In the screening test, the test item was introduced into aqueous medium at a single loading of 100 mg/L and pH 6, 7, and 8. Concentrations of metal ions were measured after a 24 hours period. In the main test, the transformation/dissolution determination was based on the dissolved Ti concentrations obtained after a 7days. Therefore Synthetic Rutile was introduced in aqueous medium at pH 6 at a loading of 1, 10 or 100 mg/L (“low”, “medium” or "high" loading, respectively).

Results obtained by measurements with ICP-OES and ICP-MS revealed that all three batches of the test items were not soluble in water. The concentration of Ti-ions were under the detection limit.
