Endpoint:
pyrophoric liquids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
flammable liquids: obsolete as covered by section 'Flash point'
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2013-02-13 to 2013-02-15
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes
Key result
Test procedure:
step 1
step 2
step 3
step 4
Identity of evolved gas:
not applicable as no gas evolved
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed
Remarks:
The substance is not flammable in contact with water

Results:

1. Following the addition of the test substance to an evaporating dish containing water at room temperature, no evolved gas was observed; no ignition was observed.

2. Following the addition of the test substance to filter paper on the surface of water at room temperature, no evolved gas was observed; no ignition was observed.

3. Following the drop wise addition of water at room temperature onto the test substance, no evolved gas was observed; no ignition was observed.

4. The rate of evolved gas from the test substance was determined in triplicate. The rate was estimated to be <1 L/Kg per hour in each of the three determinations.

Therefore, it can be concluded that the test substance is not flammable in contact with water.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The flammability of the test substance in contact with water was determined in accordance with EU Test Method A.12 and in compliance with GLP. Under the conditions of the study, the test substance was considered not to be flammable in contact with water. The result is considered to be reliable.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test substance in contact with water was determined in accordance with EU Test Method A.12 and in compliance with GLP. Under the conditions of the study, the test substance was considered not to be flammable in contact with water.

Description of key information

Flammability: not flammable

Flammability in contact with water: not flammable

Pyrophoricity: not flammable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The flammability study is not required for liquids as flammability is assessed on the basis of flash point.

There is no indication on the basis of structure and experience in handling and use that the substance is pyrophoric (flammable in contact with air).

Therefore, in accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI, there is no need to conduct further flammability testing.

However, the flammability of the test substance in contact with water was determined in accordance with EU Test Method A.12 and in compliance with GLP. Under the conditions of the study, the test substance was considered not to be flammable in contact with water. The result is considered to be reliable.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Flammability of liquid:

The substance is not classified for flammability according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. This is on the basis of a measured flash point of 146±2°C at 1013 hPa.

Flammability in contact with air: There is no evidence to suggest that the submission substance should be classified for this hazard on the basis of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.

Flammability in contact with water: There is no evidence to suggest that the submission substance should be classified for flammability in contact with water on the basis of Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
