The acute toxicity of alcohols, C16-18, ethoxylated, phosphates (CAS 106233-09-4) to Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata was determined according to OECD-Guideline 201 (Vryenhoef, 2013). The static test was conducted with a series of dilutions, created from a saturated solution with a loading rate of 50 mg/L test item. For the creation of this saturated solution (100% v/v), the stirring was stopped after 24 hours and any undissolved test item was removed by filtration through a 0.2 microm Sartorius Sartopore filter. A series of dilutions was made from this saturated solution to give stock solutions of 32, 10, 3.2 and 1.0% v/v saturated solution. Analysis of the 10, 3.2 and 1.0% v/v test preparations at 0 hours showed measured concentrations of less than the limit of quantification (LOQ, 0.94 mg/L). Measured concentrations of 1.3 and 5.9 mg/L were obtained for the 32 and 100% v/v saturated solution test preparations respectively. Chemical analysis at test end showed measured concentrations of less than the LOQ were obtained for all test preparations, except for the 100 % v/v saturated solution. For the latter, a measured concentration of 5.0 mg/L (85% of the 0-hour measured concentration) was observed. The decline in measured concentration observed at 32 % v/v saturated solution was considered to be due to the adsorption of the test item to the algal cells present rather than instability given that no significant losses were observed at the concentration of 100% v/v saturated solution where fewer numbers of algal cells were present to which adsorption could occur. Furthermore, the initial range-finding test where no effect on growth was observed and thence a higher numbers of algal cells were present, a decline in measured concentration to less than the LOQ occurred. As such it was considered appropriate to calculate the results based on 0-hour measured test substance concentrations only. A NOELR of 1.3 mg/L and an EL50 > 5.9 mg/L (highest attainable test substance concentration) was determined for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.
