The 34 day NOEC based on fish mortality, length, weight and condition was considered to be 5.6 mg B/L.
The reference substance (BAGE) hydrolyses within less than an hour to
its hydrolysis products: Boric acid and glycerol. Therefore, conducting
a long-term fish study on the reference substance itself was considered
not to be feasible. If a study was conducted on the reference substance,
it would give a result representative of the hydrolysis products
Boric acid is considered to be the hydrolysis product of main concern.
An assessment of boric acid has therefore been made based on available
long-term fish study data.
Hooftman et al 2000 Brachydanio rerio:
A study was conducted according to OECD Guideline 210 (Fish, Early-Life
Stage Toxicity Test).
Brachydanio rerio fertilized eggs/embryos were exposed in a semi-static
system for 34 days to the following nominal concentrations of boric
acid: Control (0), 0.18, 0.56, 1.8, 5.6, 18, 56 mg B/L.
The 34 day NOEC based on fish mortality, length, weight and condition
was considered to be 5.6 mg B/L based on the results of the study.
Using multiple statistical approaches, the data for egg hatch, mortality
and fish length are consistent in showing statistical effects at
exposures of 18 mg B/L and above. The exposures ranging from 0.18 to 5.6
mg B/L were not statistically different from each other. The statistical
review concluded that the 5.6 mg B/L group should be considered to be
the NOEC based on multiple statistical approaches.
Glycerol is the other hydrolysis product of the reference substance,
BAGE. It is not classified for the environment according to CLP or DSD.
Available data (see section 13) suggests that glycerol is of low
toxicity to fish.
