Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Interpretation of results:
under test conditions no biodegradation observed
Conclusions:
No physico-chemical degradation was observed when the test substance was incubated without inoculum.
Thus, C4-Diacetal may be characterized as: not easily biodegradable.
Executive summary:

The ready biodegradability of C4-Diacetal has been examined using the modified MITI test I. A mixture of activated sludge from a domestic sewage works and from a pilot chemical waste water treatment plant was exposed under controlled conditions to 100 mg/l of the test substance. After an incubation period of 28 days, the BOD/ThOD ratio was calculated to determine the biological degradability. C4-Diacetal shows a ready biodegradability of <1%. Control experiments revealed that the reference substance sodium benzoate was ultimately biodegraded and that the test substance had no toxic effect on the microogranisms in the activated sludge at concentrations >= 100 mg/l. No physico-chemical degradation was observed when the test substance was incubated without inoculum. Thus, C4-Diacetal may be characterized as: not easily biodegradable.
