Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Light microcopic examination

The picture in the report shows that a small amount of particles < 100 µm is present. The shape of these fines is non-fibrous. See attachment.

It is shown that no particles pass the 100 µm sieve. The presence of water makes the product more sticky and the (fine) particles agglomerate. Consequently no PSD(Particle Size Distribution)  has to be determined.

Conclusions:
Light microscopic examination revealed that the α,α,α',α'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-α,α-diol contains a small amount of particles < 100 µm. The shape of these fines is non-fibrous.
No particles pass the 100 µm sieve. The presence of water makes the product more sticky and the (fine) particles agglomerate. As a result α,α,α',α'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-α,α-diol is not dusty.
There is no inhalation risk related to α,α,α',α'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-α,α-diol.
Executive summary:

The granulometry of α,α,α',α'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-α,α-diol was determined in accordance with European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7a, Endpoint specific guidance, May 2008.

Description of key information

There is no inhalation risk related to α,α,α',α'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-α,α-diol.

Additional information

The particle size distribution of the sample analysed in China of α,α,α',α'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-α,α'-diol is different than the standard sample analysed in The Netherlands by Altena. The data for granulometry are dependent on the type, production and pretreatment of the sample.
