Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
1 August 2012 - 23 August 2012
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
0 s
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

The test material pile failed to ignite during the 2 minutes that the Bunsen flame was applied.

Interpretation of results:
other: Not classified in accordance with EU criteria
Conclusions:
Under the conditions of this study, the test material has been determined to be not highly flammable as it failed to ignite in the preliminary screening test.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test material was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10 under GLP conditions.

In a preliminary test, an air-rich Bunsen flame was applied to a pile of the test material for two minutes. The pile failed to ignite.

Under the conditions of this study, the test material has been determined to be not highly flammable as it failed to ignite in the preliminary screening test.

Description of key information

Under the conditions of this study, the test material has been determined to be not highly flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

The flammability of the test material was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10 under GLP conditions. It was awarded a reliability score of 1 in accordance with the principles for assessing data quality set forth by Klimisch et al (1997).

In a preliminary test, an air-rich Bunsen flame was applied to a pile of the test material for two minutes. The pile failed to ignite.

Under the conditions of this study, the test material has been determined to be not highly flammable as it failed to ignite in the preliminary screening test.

In accordance with Section 1 of Annex XI of the Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH), it is considered justified to omit the flammability (contact with water) study and the pyrophoric properties of solids and liquids study (both required in Section 7.10 of Annex VII) as there is no evidence of the test material either spontaneously igniting in air at room temperature or exhibiting flammable properties in contact with water.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, the test material does not require classification for flammability.
