Link to relevant study record(s)
- Endpoint:
- auto-ignition temperature (liquids)
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 13-20 June, 2022
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Justification for type of information:
- The study was conducted according to an internationally recognised method, and under GLP. No deviation affected the quality of the study. The substance is adequately identified. Validation applies without restrictions.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- DIN 51794 (Testing of mineral oil hydrocarbons - Determination of ignition temperature)
- Version / remarks:
- 2003
- Deviations:
- yes
- Remarks:
- After one variation of drops the 2°C test modus starts, even when an ignition has occurred. In the DIN method 51794 steps of 5°C are proposed in this case.
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- DIN EN 14522, Method S (Determination of the auto ignition temperature of gases and vapours)
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.15 (Auto-Ignition Temperature (Liquids and Gases))
- Version / remarks:
- 2008
- Deviations:
- yes
- Remarks:
- The apparatus works with a program according to DIN EN14522 which is not mentioned in EU A.15 guidance.
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Remarks:
- GLP-BESCHEININGUNG Statement of GLP Compliance (inspected on 28-29 Avril 2021, signed on 21 June 2021)
- Key result
- Auto-ignition temperature:
- 290 °C
- Atm. press.:
- ca. 1 001.2 mBar
- Conclusions:
- The test substance was determined to have an auto-ignition temperature of 290°C at ca 1001.2 mBar.
This parameter is not relevant for classification; however the information is useful regarding process safety and potential additional fire hazard.
No particular hazard is anticipated in normal conditions of storage. - Executive summary:
A GLP study was conducted to determine the auto ignition temperature of test item in compliance EU-Method A.15 (referring to DIN 51794) and DIN EN 14522.
The auto ignition temperature was determined in three independent determinations. A lowest value of the main test of 290°C was found at pressure of ca 1001.2 mBar.

Result
The requirements for repeatability of the DIN standard are stated as follows: Three lowest values of the main test have to lie within a range of 5 °C (if auto ignition temperature is below 300 °C) respectively 10 °C (if auto ignition temperature is above 300 °C).
The following lowest values were recorded:
Table 1 - Lowest Values Main Test
Experiment | Value (rounded to integer) | Ignition delay | Drops used |
First test series | 294 °C | 28 s | 5 |
Second test series | 290 °C | 31 s | 5 |
Third test series | 290 °C | 20 s | 7 |
The lowest value of the auto ignition temperature is 290 °C (atmospheric pressure during the test of the lowest value was 1001.2 mbar). This value was determined using 5 respectively 7 drops test item. The test item showed auto ignition after 20 respectively 28 seconds.
The auto ignition temperature (result of determination) is the lowest value from the lowest values of the three experiments, rounded down to a whole multiple of 5 °C. Therefore, the auto ignition temperature is stated as 290 °C.
Validity
In the DIN, the following limits are applied to the range of lowest values which may be used for evaluation:
Table 2 - Acceptable ranges
Auto ignition temp. | Range |
< 300 °C | difference between three values of the main test max. 5 °C |
> 300 °C | difference between three values of the main test max. 10 °C |
The three lowest values of the main test lay within a range of 5 °C (as required for auto ignition temperatures below 300 °C).
The largest difference between measured ignition temperatures was 4 °C
Description of key information
The test substance was determined to have an auto-ignition temperature of 290°C at ca 1001.2 mBar.
No particular hazard is anticipated in normal conditions of storage
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Autoflammability / Self-ignition temperature at 101 325 Pa:
- 290 °C
Additional information
A fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized DIN/EU method and under GLP, is available. It is considered as a key study, and the result is retained as key data.
This parameter is not relevant for classification, however the information is useful regarding process safety and potential additional fire hazard.
