pH is adjusted to 6.0 rt 0.5 by addition of calcium carbonate.
Method of preparation
The dry constituents were blended in the correct proportions and mixed thoroughly, in the large-scale laboratory mixer Cutter VB. Moisture content was then determined by drying a small sample at 105OC and re-weighing. Deionised water was added to give an overall moisture content of about 30% of the dry weight, and the medium was thoroughly mixed.
TEST ARTICLE FORMULATES
Suitable volumes of a 10% test article solution in acetone were mixed with small amounts of dry soil, after evaporation of the solvent, subsequently added to the rest of the soil. The soil was mixed with the large laboratory mixer Cutter VB for about 1 minute and the moisture content was raised to the required level by addition of distilled water. - Test organisms (species):

- Justificcation for the selection of the test system: the Eisenia foetida was chosen as an earthworm species, since it is widely accepted by Health Authorities as an experimental model with documented susceptibility to a wide range of toxic substances.
Number: 40 animals/concentration subdivided into 4 replicates (control included)
Body weight and age: the earthworms used were adult with a well-developed clitellium, more than 6 weeks old, with an average weight of 320 mg.
Supplier: laboratory breeding. Eisenia foetida are bred at an average of 20 OC in plastic boxes of about 32x27x25 cm under continuous illumination, the medium consists of 50:50 mixture of horse manure and peat, at
pH 7.0.
Animal pre-treatment: earthworms were pre-conditioned for 24 hours in the untreated artificial soil under the same conditions of the test and then quickly washed. - Study type:

- Experimental design: Experimental design: on the basis of preliminary results, the test article was tested at the nominal concentration of 1000 mglkg (dried soil) (Limit test). One group of animals was treated only with water (control group).
Contain ers: the containers consisted of 1000 ml glass beakers.
Preparation of the containers: for each treatment group, 750 g wet weight of the test medium were placed into each glass container and then 10 pre-treated earthworms were placed on the medium surface. The containers were covered with perforated plastic film to prevent the test medium from drying.

Environmental conditions: the test was performed in continuous light at 20°C +/-2"C..
Observation period: 14 days.
Observation of visible abnormalities and mortality the animals were inspected after 7 and 14 days.
Worms are classified as dead when they do not respond to a gentle mechanical stimulus to the front end. Any behavioral or pathologial signs noted were reported.
