- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 27 Jun 2018
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
- reference to same study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Standard Operating Procedure E402 Flammability (Solids) (A10)
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
- Endpoint:
- self-heating substances / mixtures
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is completely molten at 160°C

A screening test was carried out first with a small amount of sample approx. 2 cm² across to determine how the sample would react when exposed to a flame. This was also carried out to determine if any additional specialist safety measurements were needed when carrying out the initial test. It was found that no additional specialist safety requirements were needed.
A flame was directed at the sample constantly for two minutes using a blowlamp at approx. 1000 °C. It showed a low flammability as a small flame developed, not higher than 4 cm. The part of the sample that was closest to the flame carbonised and the flame continued on through the line of sample for 13.42 minutes before extinguishing itself. Although this was observed, the
material did not meet the requirements of the test, therefore the material could not be considered to be flammable as the material did not burn all the way through in the time of 4 minutes.
Description of key information
non-flammable on ignition (EU A.10)
non-pyrohoric
not releasing flammable gases on contact with water
not self-heating
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- not classified
Additional information
The flammability (solids) test according to EU A.10 yielded a negative result.
Based on structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoric properties and flammability on contact with water are excluded.
Based on the fact that the substance is completely molten at 160 °C (melting point ca. 130 °C), the substance is not self-heating.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The available data on flammability of the substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and they are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification:
Based on the outcome of the EU A.10 test, the substance is non-flammable on ignition.
Based on structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoric properties and flammability on contact with water are not expected.
Based on the fact that the substance is completely molten at 160 °C (melting point ca. 130 °C), the substance is not self-heating.
