Test conditions

Details on test conditions:
The experiment was performed with 2 different soils (Alabama - ALB- and Arlington - ARL- , US). Alabama soil was characterised by the presence of vanillin-destroying bacteria, which were isolated and cultured in mineral media. Arlington soil is a heavy silty clay loam.
An experimental unit was composed by 9 Kg of air dry soil, placed in two-gallon pots and hydrated with distilled water. Each experimental condition was performed in duplicate. The experimental conditions were:

1- ALB
2- ALB + Vanillin [1g/kg]
3- ARL
4- ARL + Vanillin [1g/kg]
5- ARL + Vanillin [1g/kg] + suspension of pure culture of vanillin destroying bacteria

From time to time, the number of microorganisms was determined until 57 days of incubation.

Microorganism concentration determination:
The number of microorganisms was determined by the method described by Brown using albumen agar (no more details were provided by the
authors). The analysis was performed in duplicate using dilution of 1/20000 and 1/200000.
