Description of key information

Iron manganese trioxide is an inorganic, brown to black solid. It exists in two forms: powder and nanomaterial.

Iron manganese trioxide has a low water solubility:

Fe: < 1µg/L after 24 hours at pH8 (1 and 10g loading)

Mn 186 µg/L (1g loading) and 658 µg/L (10g loading) after 24 hours at pH8

Melting point: > 1000°C

Relative density: 4.5

Additional information

Information on nanoform-specific physico-chemical properties of iron manganese oxide:

- Specific area: BET Surface Area: 9.9080 m²/g

- Zeta Potential: The zeta potential is not a characteristic of the metal oxide or the particle consisting of iron oxide in itself.

- Porosity: Comparison between the results of the particle size measurements and the specific surface area according to BET shows no significant evidence for porosity.

- Surface Chemistry: The surface chemistry of iron oxide and ferrite pigments is determined by the oxygen present on the surface and their hydroxylation. So no feasible surface activity is observed beside the typical adsorption of species.

- Agglomeration/Aggregation: Like most particulate substances iron oxide and ferrite pigments are present in a highly agglomerated and aggregated form only. These are to be separated in the dispersion process.

- Crystalline Phase: This property is not applicable for iron manganese trioxide.

- Photocatalytic Activity: No known photocatalytic activities of iron oxide and ferrite pigments.

- Pour Density: Result given as tamped density: 0.6 - 1.0 g/ml

- Aspect Ratio: Median aspect ratio 1.5 +/-0.5
