Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Conclusions:
- The test item (milled carbonised PAN based fibre) is not a highly flammable solid according the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A.10. The classification criteria for flammable solids according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) are not met.
- Executive summary:
The test item (milled carbonised PAN based fibre) is not a highly flammable solid according the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A.10. The classification criteria for flammable solids according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation) are not met.
Reference
Preliminary test:
The test item was examined without pre-treatment. The test item could not be ignited with a flame. Therefore, the main test did not have to be performed.
Description of key information
According to EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids)) the test item (milled carbonised PAN based fibre) is not a highly flammable solid. The test item could not be ignited with a flame.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
The test substance (milled carbonised PAN based fibre) falls within the typical range of the substance definition including the impurities (in total < 0.3%) which in principle consist of metal and mixed metal oxides (mainly Al, Ca, Fe, Na, and Si oxides). These substances are of negligible concern regarding human health and the environment.
The different manufacturing processes and precursor materials for non-graphitic carbon fibres within the scope of this registration lead to slightly different compositions. The variations in oxygen content are not expected to trigger flammability. The obtained test result and the resulting classification are therefore regarded to also cover all other qualities of the substance non-graphitic carbon fibre within the scope of this registration.
Justification for classification or non-classification
According to EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids)) the test item (milled carbonised PAN based fibre) is not a highly flammable solid. The test item could not be ignited with a flame, i.e. the classification criteria for flammability are not met.
