Description of key information
Toxicity to algae was tested in a GLP and guideline study according to OECD 201 on a structural analogue of Reactive Blue FC15353. Growth inhibition was demonstrably caused by light attenuation of this coloured test substance at all test concentrations, thus no compound related growth inhibition (toxicity) occurred. No EC50 or EC10 can be established, the NOEC is ≥ 100 mg/L.

In a 72 hour toxicity study, cultures of Scenedesmus subspicatus were exposed to a structural analogue to Reactive Blue FC 15353 at nominal concentrations of 100, 32, 10, 3.2, and 1.0 mg/L under static conditions in accordance with OECD guideline 201. In experiment A (algae directly exposed to the test substance) EC50, EC10, and EC90 values based on biomass were 18, 1.0, and > 100 mg/L respectively. In experiment A, EC50, EC10, and EC90 values based on growth rate were 110, 8.2, and > 100 mg/L, respectively. In experiment B (algal growth inhibition caused only by light attenuation) EC50, EC10, and EC90 values based on biomass were 20, 0.8, and > 100 mg/L, respectively. In experiment B, EC50, EC10, and EC90 values based on growth rate were > 100, 6.3, and > 100 mg/L, respectively. Comparing experiment A and B, differences in algal growth inhibition were lower than 10 % for all test concentrations.
There were no compound related phytotoxic effects. Therefore, no compound related effect levels (EC50, EC10, NOEC) can be derived. The key conclusion from this study is an NOEC for compound-related effects of ≥ 100 mg/L.
