The acute toxicity of Tri-C18-22 (even numbered)-alkyl 2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylate towards terrestrial organism was not specifically determined.

However, data for a structurally related substance Tri (hexyl, octyl, decyl) citrate are available with the only difference in shorter carbon chain ester groups. Tri (hexyl, octyl, decyl) citrate showed only low toxicity for soil macroorganism and plants.

The 14 day LC50 of Tri (hexyl, octyl, decyl) citrate to Eisenia foetida was observed to be > 1000 mg/kg, the highest dose tested. The no observed effect concentration (NOEC) after 14 days of exposure was calculated to be 1000 mg/kg, based on earthworm weight. There were no sub-lethal morphological changes observed in the test earthworms. There was not considered to be any evidence of treatment-related repellent effects.

The toxicity of Tri (hexyl, octyl, decyl) citrate for plants was investigated. The substance has no effect on emergence, but can affect development and growth of seedlings of sensitive species from a concentration of 81.88 mg/kg dry soil.

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the toxicity testing on invertebrates study does not need to be conducted as direct and indirect exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely. Tri-C18-22 (even numbered)-alkyl 2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylate1 is readily biodegradable; consequently it is considered to degrade in the environment and does not persist.
