According to Regulation (EC) No.1907/2006, Annex VIII, Section 9.2.2.1, Column 2, hydrolysis testing as a function of pH does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. The substance has been shown to be readily biodegradable, based on read-across from 3-Methylpyridine (another substance in the chemical category), which was found to be readily biodegradable in the environment, as 70% DOC removal after 8 days was reported in the OECD Guideline 301B test conducted by Weytjens and Wils (1991). In addition, supporting studies on the substance include the results of the non-guideline study by Pandey and Sandhya (1997), which showed 96% TOC removal in 48 hours at a test substance concentration of 12.5 mg 2-methylpyridine/L; and the results of the non-guideline assay by Japan MITI (1992), which demonstrated ready biodegradability of the substance (58% biodegradation by BOD in 3 weeks and on upward trend) at a test substance concentration of 100 mg 2-methylpyridine/L.
