Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

There are no reliable aquatic toxicity data available for isobutyl(dimethoxy)methylsilane (CAS 18293-82-8), therefore good quality data for structurally-related substances, isobutyl(trimethoxy)silane (CAS 18395-30-7) and 3-chloropropyl(diethoxy)methylsilane (CAS 13501-76-3), have been read across based on a weight of evidence approach.

Reliable short-term toxicity tests results are available for invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus)) for isobutyl(trimethoxy)silane (CAS 18395-30-7). The relevant short-term values are:

Daphnia: EC50 (48 h): >864 mg/l; NOEC: ≥295 (or EC50 (48 h): >660 mg/l; NOEC: ≥660 mg/l when expressed in terms of concentration of the hydrolysis product, (2-methylpropyl)silanetriol).

Algae: EC50 (72 h): >1170 mg/l; NOEC: 221 mg/l (or EC50 (72 h): >894 mg/l; NOEC: 169 mg/l when expressed in terms of concentration of the hydrolysis product, (2-methylpropyl)silanetriol).

The rapid hydrolysis of isobutyl(trimethoxy)silane (CAS 18395-30-7) (half-life 4.1 h at pH 7 and 20-25 °C) means it is likely that the test organisms in each test were exposed primarily to the hydrolysis products, (2-methylpropyl)silanetriol and methanol.

Reliable short-term toxicity tests results are available for invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus)) for 3-chloropropyl(diethoxy)methylsilane (CAS 13501-76-3). The relevant short-term values are:

Daphnia: EC50 (48 h): 295 mg/l; NOEC: 160 mg/l (or EC50 (48 h): 216 mg/l; NOEC: 117 mg/l when expressed in terms of concentration of the hydrolysis product, (3-chloropropyl)(methyl)silanediol).

Algae: EC50 (72 h): 437 mg/l; NOEC: 57 mg/l (or EC50 (72 h): 321 mg/l; NOEC: 42 mg/l when expressed in terms of concentration of the hydrolysis product, (3-chloropropyl)(methyl)silanediol).

The rapid hydrolysis of 3-chloropropyl(diethoxy)methylsilane (CAS 13501-76-3) (half-life 9.5 h at pH 7 and 20-25 °C) means it is likely that the test organisms in each test were exposed primarily to the hydrolysis products, (3-chloropropyl)(methyl)silanediol and ethanol.
