Fatty acids, C16-18, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 85116-93-4) is assumed to be not harmful to aquatic organisms based on the results from short-term studies of different trophic levels (fish, daphnia, algae). Aquatic organisms did not show any effects up to the limit of the water solubility of the tested read-across substances (Pentaerythritol tetraoleate (CAS-No. 19321-40-5), 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS-no. 25151-96-6), Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., tetraesters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 68604-44-4)) in short-term tests for fish and aquatic invertebrates (LC/EL50 > 100mg/L, LC/EL0 ≥ 100 mg/L). In addition, one test result from an algal growth inhibition test with Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata for Fatty acids, C16-18, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 85116-93-4) determined also no toxicity to algae (ErL50 and ErL10 (72h) of > 100 mg/L).
Same observations could be reported for microorganisms, as no effects on the growth of Pseudomonas putida were observed after 16 h(EL10/ EL50 > 10000 mg/L, NOELR ≥ 10000 mg/L)in cell multiplication inhibition tests for two read across substances (2,2-bis[[(1-oxoisooctadecyl)oxy]methyl]-1,3-propanediyl bis(isooctadecanoate) (CAS-No. 62125-22-8) and once of Pentaerythritol tetraoleate (CAS-No. 19321-40-5)). As the biodegradation tests exhibit the readily biodegradability, it can be assumed that the sensitive single species as well as the activated sludge test shows no inhibition and a disturbance in the biodegradation process of a sewage treatment plant is not anticipated.
Information about long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates and fish would be provided by a planned experimental study for long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates for Fatty acids, coco, triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS-No. 85566-29-6) and a 15 day-long-term study with Daphnia magna (Low, 1996) for the Polyol ester Decanoic acid, ester with 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol octanoate (11138-60-6). Fatty acids, coco, triesters with trimethylolpropane (CAS-No. 85566-29-6) was chosen as worst case substance for a long-term test for aquatic invertebrates, as this substance contains a great percentage of C12-Fatty acids, which is well known as the most sensitive Fatty acid. The fish is not expected to be more sensitive than aquatic invertebrates. Therefore and for animal welfare, no further long-term test with aquatic organisms is necessary for Fatty acids, C16-18, esters with pentaerythritol (CAS-No. 85116-93-4).
