Based on the physico-chemical properties; extremely low water solubility and propensity to form microsized agglomerates, bulk and nanoforms of carbon black expected to have a low potential for adsorption and studies on adsorption / desorption do not need to be conducted.

Carbon black, regardless of form is composed essentially of carbon which is ubiquitous in the environment.


Description of key information

In accordance with section 2 of REACH Annex XI, the adsorption/desorption screening study does not need to be conducted as the substance is highly insoluble in water and in organic solvents and cannot be measured analytically. Adsorption/desorption is the distribution of a chemical between soil and aqueous phase. Non-nanoforms of carbon black are substantially elemental carbon; they are inert, inorganic and contains no water-soluble groups, e.g. alcohols, ethers, or acids and is therefore insoluble in water. Carbon black is stable in water. It cannot be measured analytically in water, the determination of a distribution coefficient is technically not feasible
