According to the REACH Regulation (EC n.1907/2006), Annex VII, Column 2, the study does not need to be conducted if the organic substance or a homogenous mixture of organic substances contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties, but the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C.

The screening procedure did not identify any concern: the exothermic decomposition peak was recorded at 317.91 °C and involved 231.01 J/g of energy.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), 2.1.4.2 explosive properties are associated with the presence of certain chemical groups in a molecule which can react to produce very rapid increases in temperature or pressure. The preliminary screening procedures described in the Annex VI, section 3, of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria can be applied in order to avoid experimental tests; it is aimed at identifying the presence of such reactive groups and the potential for rapid energy release.

According to the screening procedure, a substance or mixture shall not be classified as explosive when the organic substance or the homogenous mixture of organic substances contains chemical groups associated with explosive properties but the exothermic decomposition energy is less than 500 J/g and the onset of exothermic decomposition is below 500 °C. The exothermic decomposition energy can be determined using a suitable calorimetric technique.

Direct Red 023 Reaction mass contains groups associated with explosive properties, but the exothermic decomposition energy is 231.01 J/g and the onset of the exotermic decomposition is 317.91 °C.

In conclusion, according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008) Direct Red 023 Reaction mass is not classified as explosive.
