Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:

A number of toxicokinetics studies are available showing that dermal absorption of chromium (III) is very poor.  The FIOH document (2006) discusses several dermal absorption studies of chromium (III) compounds and concludes that the low skin permeability of chromium (III) compounds is due to skin barrier rejection of the positive chromium ions.  A review by the UK Health and Safety Executive (1989) found that approximately 2% of administered chromium (III), administered in the form of highly water-soluble chromium chloride, was dermally absorbed by guinea pigs after 5 hours.  No further testing is therefore required;  the HSE has estimated dermal exposure for an exposure duration appropriate to occupational and consumer exposure.
