Description of key information

No experimental data on Sodium (S)-lactate are available. In aqueous environments Sodium (S)-lactate fully dissociates into Na+ ions and lactic acid. Therefore, the environmental fate of Sodium (S)-lactate can be understood in terms of sodium salts and lactic acid. In accordance with regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH), Annex VIII, point 9.2.2.1, column 2, a hydrolysis study is not required if the substance is ready biodegradable. Lactic acid is readily biodegradable, which is also applicable to its sodium salt by way of read-across.
